Bike Parking inside the paid area of Walnut-Locust Station

As we reported in December, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia worked with Temple Planning students on their report on Center City bike parking. We then met with SEPTA to discuss the findings of the report.

SEPTA responded that they are committed to improving bike parking at many of its stations.

One near-term commitment, then, was to pilot a bike corral inside the paid area of the Walnut-Locust Broad St. Subway Station.

We took a first look at the four rack installation earlier this week.

On-street bike parking in the Broad and Walnut area is beyond capacity and the racks offer protection from the weather and monitored by video surveillance as well as requiring bike thieves to have a SEPTA key card. The concourse is served by elevators on the east side of Broad St between Walnut and Locust as well as the PATCO elevator at 15th and Locust.

1 block west of the Walnut Locust station these racks were installed in 2015. The air pump was installed in the last few months.

In 2015 PATCO installed inside station bike parking at 4 stations 15-16th Locust, 12th-13th Locust, 9th-10th Locust and City Hall (Camden). The racks at all 4 stations are well used. Late last year PATCO has also installed air pumps at the three Philadelphia stations. We hope that SEPTA would consider adding a bike repair station after the pilot is evaluated.
