We’re getting close to your last chance to sign up for our last groupride of the season. It’ll take place next weekend, October 10, and will likely be attended by county officials who helped make the trail what it is today.
On September 18, Montgomery County Commissioners officially opened 2.7 miles of the Pennypack Trail, from Welsh Road to Byberry road. The trail, through Lower Moreland, will make running, bicycling and hiking through Montgomery County that much easier. As noted by Montgomery News,
Biking, walking and jogging through Montgomery County became considerably easier Friday, as the county commissioners officially cut the ribbon on a new 2.7-mile extension of the Pennypack Trail.
The effort to restore the trail started in part with a simple question, one that commissioners Chairman Josh Shapiro said he heard frequently from his kids as they came upon closed trails in nearby Lorimer Park.
The project, eventually spearheaded by all Montgomery County commissioners, including Val Arkoosh, and the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, includes three restored bridges, crosswalk signals and reconstruction of the previously-closed trails.
A multi-municipality effort, this is the sort of project the Bicycle Coalition regularly works on, bringing private and public partners together to make a difference in our communities.
So, next weekend, members of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia will be leading a members-only group ride that will cover, in part, this newly-opened part of the Pennypack Trail. Also joining the Bicycle Coalition and its members, schedule permitting, will be County Commissioner Val Arkoosh, who played a tremendous role in completing the trail.
A map of the route is available here.
You can RSVP here.
One of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia’s objectives is to connect the eventual 750 miles of trails so that anyone in the Greater Philadelphia region can walk out their front door and head north or south, east of west, and spend the whole day traveling the Circuit.
Not a member? Well, with your $35 yearly membership, you’ll join a community of more than 3,000 dedicated Delaware Valley residents advocating for better trails, safe routes, connecting the Greater Philadelphia bicycle network, and building out The Circuit.
