On October 4, the Bicycle Coalition will host our October Supporter Social at 1500 Walnut St., Suite 1107, with Karen Thompson, Planner/Project Manager of the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation.
She’ll be talking about the Delaware River Trail, a portion of The Circuit, which will run from the Pier 70 shopping center in South Philadelphia to Sugarhouse Casino in Fishtown, and eventually, between Allegheny Avenue and Oregon Avenue.
The trail (first proposed in the 2011 Master Plan for the Central Delaware) is being designed and built in three sections: 1) an upgrade to the existing off-road interim trail that runs along the river between Washington Avenue and Pier 70 Boulevard, 2) a new multi-use sidepath along the eastern side of Columbus Boulevard between Washington Avenue and Spring Garden Street that will provide separate bicycle and pedestrian paths and a landscape buffer from vehicular traffic, and 3) a new off-road section that will connect the existing Penn Street Trail segment through Sugarhouse Casino to points north along the river. The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation is overseeing each of these projects.
A park on top of a cap between Walnut Chestnut Streets over I-95 and Delaware Avenue was also proposed by the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation. A feasibility study evaluating the cap was recently completed.
Funding was committed by PennDOT, the City of Philadelphia, and the William Penn Foundation in early March 2017.
Join us to speak with Karen about this project on October 4. We’ll have snacks and refreshments. All are welcome.
