Tragically, a bicyclist was killed on Tuesday morning after the driver of a private sanitation truck struck her at 11th and Spruce Streets in Center City.
It marks the third bicyclist killed in Philadelphia in 2017 and, according to our counts, the 77th traffic death this year.
It is time for a change. Spruce and Pine Streets, once Philadelphia’s premier river-to-river bike routes have been worn down to the point where they are almost nonexistent. The Bicycle Coalition has already called upon the city to re-stripe these bike lanes before the end of the year. But more needs to be done.
Too many Philadelphians are being killed on our streets. The city’s Vision Zero policy needs to create higher quality, safer, bike lanes, faster.
On Wednesday, November 29, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia and 5th Square will host a candlelight vigil for the victim. The vigil will begin at 5pm and all are welcome to attend.
This tragedy is still under investigation. We are in touch with the Philadelphia Police Department. We will update the information here as we receive it.
WHEN: Wednesday, November 29, 5pm
WHERE: 11th and Spruce

Update: There will be another action tomorrow morning at 7:30am to form a human-protected bike lane on the street where the cyclist was killed. Here is the Facebook invite.
