We’ll be talking to riders from around the region for our new I Love Riding My Bike interview series. This series is modeled after the I Love Riding In the City series, published in Urban Velo from 2007-2014.

Bike in Philly

Name and pronouns: Lee Caparas, he/him
Current bike(s): Cervelo P-Series (triathlon), Marin Nail Trail 6 (mountain bike), Fuji Cross 1.1 (cx bike) & SE Draft (commuter single speed)
Dream bike (if you have one): I have too many bikes and many dream ones!

Where do you live and what’s it like riding around there?

I live in the Old City neighborhood [of Philadelphia] and it nice to be able to get to many different parts of the city as I get to ride on the Ben Franklin Bridge, Delaware Ave waterfront, head west/east on Spring Garden Street, Spruce/Pine Streets and Arch St.

What do you love about biking in the Philly region?

I’m always encouraged to see the advocacy efforts of the BCGP and local civic associations throughout the Delaware Valley, with safety results such as added bike lane poles, updated bike lanes and closed streets such as MLK Blvd for bikers, runners and pedestrians to have a safe area to exercise. I also enjoy riding on the SRT and the efforts in recent years to repave and widen that trail.

What’s your favorite city to ride in (or your favorite place to ride) and why?

I do love the diverse geography that Philly and the surrounding areas provides. It you want challenging hills, you have that in Manayunk, into Gladwyne and further out to Valley Forge and Chester County. If you prefer flatter roads to ride, Southern New Jersey and the further east you ride all the way to the shore provides that type of riding. And then the Wissahickon and Fairmount areas provide mtb and gravel trails to ride!
What else do you want to tell us about yourself, your bike riding, your love for Philly, etc.?
I enjoy the biking community here! It seems to be growing and whether you’re a bike commuter, a competitve road cyclist, or an off road cyclist, we’re all connected by our love of biking!
