Starting this week, more than 200 miles of state highways around the Philadelphia region will be resurfaced. PennDOT sends out paving notices a couple weeks in advance of new projects and the notices include paving for the next following week. On this particular paving notice there are a set of resurfacing projects including Market Street.

In early summer of 2022, Council President Clarke approved an extension of the Market street protected bike lane that would include a two way bike lane and bike signals from 20th to 23rd street. This bike lane would help connect the 22nd street protected bike lane to the protected lane starting at 20th Street and west to 23rd Street.

Market Street between 30th and 34th street is also getting a some rehab. A painted bike lane will be added on both the North and South sides of the street.

What kind of bike lane goes in between 30th Street and 23rd Street is still being developed between PennDOT D-6 and the City of Philadelphia.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because slowdowns will occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under these resurfacing projects, PennDOT is milling the existing roadway surfaces and repaving the state highways with new asphalt. The new pavement will seal the roadways and provide motorists with a smoother riding surface.

Motorists can check conditions on major roadways by visiting www.511PA.com or downloading the 511PA mobile application. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras.
