Joshua Funches, a BCYC alum and president of the National Youth Bike Council, has been named the Emerging Leader of the Year by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB). The League announced their awards on the first day of this year’s virtual National Bike Summit.

Joshua Funches, recipient of the Emerging Leader of the Year Award from the League of American Bicyclists, with the quote: "2020 has shown me that one of the most popular activities for youth was bicycling. I think that naturally shows our relationship with biking and I hope that in 2021 we can see that relationship grow through new attention brought to cycling. Seeing youth use bicycling as a means of self improvement, development and recreation fills my heart!"

Here’s a summary of Joshua’s award (from the LAB’s blog):

Emerging Leader of the Year

This award is a special accolade for a young person who is new to the bicycling movement and has demonstrated exceptional and inspiring bicycle advocacy. Nominees have demonstrated leadership in their short tenure and show great potential to continue leading in the bicycling movement.

Joshua Funches is the co-founder and president of the National Youth Bike Council which was officially started in January of 2017 by a group of youth who were very motivated by the idea of connecting youth across the nation as leaders in the biking community. He’s encouraged and worked with the League to bring youth-directed programming to the 2021 National Bike Summit, while also organizing a Youth Bike Summit later in 2021.
