An overnight cycling trip is a great opportunity to explore an area, excellent for exercise, and just plain fun. With its ever-growing network of trails and bike-friendly streets, the Greater Philadelphia area is a fantastic location to go on a bikepacking tour. 

Cycles PHL, a local North Philly bike shop, hosts several bike touring trips called Cycles Campout trips that take place exclusively in the Philadelphia region. All of their tours are guided and take riders to local nature destinations. These rides have been amazing experiences for those who’ve participated (including Bicycle Coalition staff members), offering a slow roll that’s more about having fun and socializing with new friends, than a high-speed, high-intensity ride.

Next month, Cycles PHL will be hosting their longest Campout of the summer: a 270-mile loop around Delaware Bay, taking place over six days. 

On August 10, riders will embark from Philadelphia heading southeast into New Jersey, completing a ride in Wharton State Forest. The adventure continues the next day towards a campsite near Atlantic City. The third day takes riders south through various Jersey shore beach towns, across the Delaware Bay via the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, finishing in Cape Henlopen State Park. The fourth day is a day off from riding, allowing time to explore Cape Henlopen, one of the best public lands in the region.

On day five, the ride continues north through Delaware to Lum’s Pond State Park. Participants return to Philadelphia on August 15. 

All riders participating will travel at the same easy pace prior Campout riders have enjoyed. 

While it may seem like a lot of riding, the trip is “semi-supported.” A ticket includes all meals, all campsite and travel fees, route planning, and an experienced first-aid certified guide. The ride is at a relaxed pace because, after all, it is your vacation. Participants are expected to carry their sleeping gear, shelter, and clothing.
