Construction was one of the businesses allowed to restart this week in Philadelphia. So, we expect the spring paving season to begin soon. We mapped the roads that are slated to be repaved by either PennDOT or the City and the planned new or upgraded bike lanes.
On the map, below, the red lines are expected to be protected bike lanes while green lines will simply be paint buffered; the thin brown lines are where standard bike lanes will be installed. Where available we included images of the concept drawings, which you can view by clicking on the line.
While a few of these projects need Council ordinances, the protected bike lanes expected from these various paving projects include:
- 22nd (between South and Market Street)
- South Street (from Convention Center to 33rd)
- S. 34th Street (Walnut to Spruce)
- 6th Street (Race to Market St.)
- Delaware Avenue (Spring Garden to Penn St)
- Essington/Passyunk
- 49th/Grays/Lindbergh
- JFK Boulvevard (15th to 20th)
- Richmond Street (Lewis to Berkshire)
- I St. (Cayuge to Ramona)
- 8th Street (Vine to Race)
- Parkside (52nd to Bryn Mawr)
- Grays Ferry Bridge (a two-way side path on the south side plus protected bike lane on the north side)
The roads that are not due for protection this year (or block by block protection, which is still not decided) include:
- Ben Franklin Parkway & Eakins Oval
- 10th Street
- Belmont Avenue
- Columbus from Washington to Oregon
- Valley Avenue
- 22nd (Market to the Ben Franklin Parkway)
