We’re thrilled to announce the start of a new year for our Youth Advisory Council (YAC) and the eight passionate and dedicated youth ambassadors of BCYC who will serve on the council. Representing their peers, these young leaders are poised to make a powerful impact within our community and gain valuable experience that will help shape their futures.

For those who are unfamiliar, our YAC was founded to empower youth by giving them an active voice within our cycling community. Through YAC, BCYC youth take on the responsibility of representing their fellow cyclists while learning about advocacy, community engagement, and leadership. They’re not only developing skills to grow as individuals but are also working to promote safe, accessible cycling for everyone.

Last year’s YAC cohort made impressive strides, putting public speaking skills to work with an engaging presentation at Philly Bike Expo. This year, we’re excited to see how this new cohort will continue the mission and bring fresh energy and perspectives to our work.

As our eight youth leaders take on these leadership roles, they’ll engage in a range of activities designed to build their skills and broaden their understanding of leadership. They’ll collaborate on projects, lead initiatives, and represent youth voices at community meetings and events. This year, our YAC members will also have more opportunities to work directly with community stakeholders, learning the nuances of community engagement, effective communication, and project management.

They’ve already began to make an impact, with several of our YAC members volunteering at the 25th District’s 5th Annual Haunted Hunting Park event hosted by the Philadelphia Police Department. Our youth enjoyed an evening of Halloween celebrations and engaging with the community for spooky activities including a Haunted Rec Center, Hayrides, Spooky Bus, Trunk or Treat, Games and more!

The skills our YAC members develop aren’t just for today; they’ll take these skills with them as they move into adulthood and future careers. Youth who participate in YAC have gone on to become advocates, organizers, and changemakers. They leave with a network of supportive peers, mentors, and a sense of empowerment, knowing that they can make a difference in their communities.

We invite our community to support them in any way they can, and cheer on these young leaders as they work to make our city a better, safer place for cyclists of all ages.

Here’s to a fantastic year ahead, filled with growth, leadership, and positive change!
