Tonight, PenTrans will host the 2018 Peter Javsicas Multi-Modal Transportation Advocate Awards and Holiday Reception, an event to honor the legacy of long-time transportation advocate Peter Javsicas.
The event will take place at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia, 215 South 16th Street.
Peter Javsicas was a transportation advocate and executive director of Pennsylvanians and a giant in the transportation community here. The Mt. Airy resident was a longtime friend of the Bicycle Coalition and we regularly worked together on multi-modal transportation projects and advocacy.
Terribly, in 2017, Peter was standing on the sidewalk at the corner of 16th and JFK in Center City, Philadelphia, when an out of control driver drove up onto the sidewalk, hitting Peter and one other person before smashing into a news stand and storefront. Peter was killed. The driver of the vehicle was never charged.
Since that time, the Bicycle Coalition has worked alongside Peter’s widow, Anne, and her children, to make Philadelphia streets safer for everyone. Anne and Aaron Javsicas are heavily involved in the organizing of Families for Safe Streets Greater Philadelphia, a program of the Bicycle Coalition which will begin its public advocacy efforts in the new year.
The event will begin at 5:00 and will honor Rep. John Taylor and Rep. Bill Keller.
Invited speakers include Leslie Richards, Jennie Granger, Jeff Knueppel, Chris Puchalsky and Ken McClain with special guests Anne and Aaron Javsicas.
Tickets are are available at the door.
