About Rae Whatley

Rae is a native of Philadelphia, currently residing in Germantown. Passionate about travel and languages from childhood, Rae worked overseas for two years after graduating from Grinnell College and before pursuing a Masters of Arts in Linguistics at the University of Pittsburgh. After 9 years teaching English as a Second and Foreign language both in the U.S. and abroad, Rae entered the Wellness Industry as a massage therapist, founding Sinclair’s Soothing Minute Massage in 1997 and Jikiden Reiki Philadelphia in 2019.

A self-professed non-athlete, Rae has supported the Philadelphia Marathon, the Philadelphia Triathlon, the Philadelphia Bike Race and the Main Line Bike Race as a volunteer. Determined to help young Black athletes be seen in less “expected” spaces, she helped to found the Indo-Pacific Sailfish Aquatics Team, a children’s swim team based in Germantown, and volunteered as a USA Swim Official for 4 years. She has been cycling for pleasure and transportation since 1993 and in 2019 managed to complete the Des Moines Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI). A proud Eagle Scout parent, Rae continues to support her husband in his role as a Cycling Merit Badge Counselor for the Boy Scouts of America and she is currently on the Board of the Bicycle Club of Philadelphia. Her favorite restorative escapes are hiking (with or without dogs), paddling with the Philadelphia Canoe Club and hammock camping.

I am humbled and honored to be a part of this prestigious cycling organization. I truly have a love and passion for cycling. Here are just a few highlights of my accomplishments. Personally, my proudest accomplishment is being the mother of three beautiful daughters who are all excelling in higher education. They continue to strive for excellence and they truly make my husband and me proud. They are a blessing. Educationally, I have earned two Masters degrees in Education Leadership and Bilingual/Bicultural Studies. My Undergraduate degree is in Education from Pennsylvania State University. Professionally, I have been working in the Philadelphia Public School System for nearly thirty years. I am a Special Education Teacher, Case Manager and Liaison. Socially, I am a member of various bike clubs such as the Bicycle Club of Philadelphia, Sturdy Girl Cycling Team, and the Philly Major Taylor Cycling Club. In my community, I’m an avid runner and have completed two marathons as a Running Leader and Mentor with Students Run Philly Style, a Girl Scout Troop Leader and an organizer for Bike to Work/Bike to School Day. Again, I am truly honored by this opportunity to join the Board of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia.
