Safe Routes Philly coordinator Waffiyyah Murray has been working with the McDaniel Middle School summer camp on bike safety and encouragement activities throughout the summer, encouraging bike safety for both the 5th-8th grade students in attendance. And on Tuesday, members of the Bicycle Coalition and the Better Bike Share team held a group ride with the camp, from 21st and Tasker to the Schuylkill River Trail.
“Youth participated in bike safety lessons were they learned bike safety tips such as proper helmet fitting, bike ABC’s—how to check the air, brakes, and chain on your bike before riding—as well as how to uphold the 3 B’s of biking-be Responsible, Be Visible, Be Predictable,” Murray said. “As well as a bike rodeo, which is a bike obstacle coarse on bike safety technique such as starring, maneuvering, balancing, and hand signals. Youth were given helmets from Indego to keep them safe while biking, and information about Indego and how it works to take home and share.”
The ride was a huge success, say Murray and Alexander Oliver, site director for the STEM-focused summer camp. Check out the pictures below:
