A new section of the East Coast Greenway was recently completed in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia, connecting the Penn Street Trail to Delaware Avenue near Shackamaxon Street.
As most people who’ve ridden along Delaware Avenue already know, an off-street trail was unveiled by the city in 2013, taking cyclists a very short distance off the street: From Spring Garden Street at Delaware Ave. to Sugarhouse Casino.
Penn Street Trail
The new extension of the trail goes another 2,000 feet—behind the casino, along the waterfront, and comes out on Delaware near Shackamaxon Street, just a block away from Penn Treaty Park.
The plans for this section of the East Coast Greenway is to extend the off-street path all the way to Oregon Avenue in South Philadelphia.

The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission worked with Sugarhouse Casino to coordinate trail development as part of the casino’s recent expansion.
