On October 1st at approximately 11 PM Gordon Vanderburg, 56  was riding his bicycle through the intersection of B and Ontario Streets in West Kensington when he was struck and killed by a driver that left the scene of the crash.

A heroic witness chased down the fleeing car and was able to take the keys from the Driver. Police then took the driver in for questioning and she was subsequently released. No charges were filed but the investigation continues.

Vanderburg, who was reportedly deaf is the 5th 6th Philadelphia bicyclist killed by a driver in 2015. The most fatal bicycle crashes since 2007 2002 and is in sharp contrast to 2013, when no bicyclists were killed on Philadelphia’s streets.

Our deepest sympathies go out to Gordon’s family and friends.
