From the good news department: Philadelphia’s protected bike lane network has 19.3 miles under its belt. The Office of Transportation, Infrastructure and Sustainability (oTIS) reported on the City’s blog that “protected bike lanes in Philadelphia doubled in 2021 to more than 16 miles, with another three currently under construction.” Good news indeed! The bike lanes include: 13th Street (SG – Brandywine), 26th (Penrose Bridge), 2nd (SG – Race), American (Lehigh – Master), Grays Ferry Bridge, 10th (SG – Vine), 5th (SG – Callowhill, Race – Arch), 6th (Callowhill – Market), Parkside (41 – Bryn Mawr), Torresdale Avenue (Pennypack Creek Trail), Princeton Ave (Delaware River Trail – New State Rd), Race (8-6), Chestnut (33-30), Delaware River Trail (SG – Christian).
Mayor Kenney had committed to building a network of 30 miles of protected bike lanes when he was first elected, a commitment that was increased to 40 miles by 2025 in oTIS’s 2019 Connect Plan (p.47) and the 2021 Connect Plan’s Update (p.12).
This map, created by our own John Boyle, shows the current array of different bike lanes and trails in Philly and the surrounding counties. This map is currently up to date. Protected bike lanes are purple. Zoom in to find other features such as trailheads and Indego Bike Share stations.
