“He’s the Geator with the Heator; the Boss with the Hot Sauce; the King of Philly Rock & Roll,” reads Jerry Blavat’s official Cruisin’ 92.1 bio. “He’s as much a part of Philadelphia as cheese steaks, Tastykakes, soft pretzels, and the Liberty Bell. He has been entertaining the Delaware Valley for over 40 years.”
He’s also a bicyclist.
Legendary Philly and South Jersey radio host Jerry Blavat has been riding his bike for “a long, long time,” he says. We spoke with Blavat to learn more about his lifetime of cycling in the Philadelphia Region, and why he continues using his bike as his main form of transportation.
Tell us a little about your daily ride to and from your station.
It energizes me for the work that is ahead at the station and a great way to start the day. It puts me in a good frame of mind.
You could get around any way you want — why do you choose to ride a bike?
Good exercise and it’s faster for me to get where I have to go, rather than waiting for a cab or getting public transportation—especially in Center City.
What’s your favorite thing about riding your bike in the Delaware Valley?
I have the opportunity as I’m riding to see fans who recognize me and give out a shout, “Yo, Geator ” and I, in return, acknowledge them. They often ask if I would stop and take a picture which they put on Facebook.
Do you encourage others to ride?
Of course I encourage everyone to ride. I’ve been riding my bike for a long, long time. It keeps me alert, it’s great exercise and a great way to see the city. I think that folks should first ride in the neighborhoods with which they are familiar, and as they get more experienced, ride outside of their neighborhood. It is really a great way not only to get around but to see the wonderful things that this city has to offer – our restaurants, museums, historic spots, and everything else.
That’s why he is the “The Geator with the Heator, The Boss with the Hot Sauce”, !!
I used to ride my bike from Bala Cynwyd down though Fairmont park to west Philly, then cross town to the Atlantic Refinning company in Point Breeze, loved those biking years, circa 1979-1981
