When we launched our Safer Washington Avenue campaign last week, we reported on crash data from 2010-2012, which was 900 reportable and non-reportable crashes. Since then, we’ve put out requests for updated information, which we just received.
PennDOT reported 212 reportable crashes between 2010-2014, in which four people died and 234 were injured. The Police Department, which tracks “non-reportable” crashes, reported to us directly that between 2010-2014, there were 1,425 non-reportable crashes along the corridor. In total, Washington Avenue had 1,637 crashes over a five year period (2010-2014), which averages out to 327 crashes per year along the 2.9 mile corridor.
Making Washington Avenue safer NOW is an imperative and the current status quo is not acceptable. If you haven’t already done so, please send an email to District Council members Johnson and Squilla asking them to use their influence to reconfigure Washington Avenue to make it safer NOW.
Washington ave is a mess. Let’s not waste anymore time. It needs to be fixed NOW
Gee, if only there were some kind of plan to improve Washington Ave.
Clarence Eckerson, Jr.’s video presentation describing bicycling in Philadelphia with a background on users and facilities that uniquely meet the needs of the diverse users.
I look forward to referring to the URL as I begin the process to create a similar and current video series on bicycling in the Greater Metro District of Columbia area. D.C. is one of most bicycle friendly cities I have visited. Videos on the web providing a trasnspportation users eye view can be excelent method to communicate with the viewer. Prose only descriptions can be good, but a well planned and created videos provide an greater understanding of facts.
I find most drives are relatively uneventful – a sample: https://vimeo.com/channels/778742
