November 13th was the last day of the 2023-2024 PA legislative session and we saw the day come to a close without the passage of HB 1283 or SB 1147 further delaying the legalization of Parking Protected Bike Lanes across the commonwealth.
While obviously this is not the result we worked for, our commitment to this issue has not changed. Advocacy work is rarely a straight line to success. The process is filled with setbacks, moments of frustration, and unexpected challenges. But each year, each session, and each conversation moves us closer to our goal. Thank you to everyone who has taken action and made your voice heard in the last 2 years and the 6 years before that. With every vote in support, every legislative ally we gained, and every community that voiced its support, your collective effort has moved the issue forward.
This work is about creating momentum, and while the finish line may seem elusive, this session parking protected bike lane legislation got further than ever before. For both HB 1283 and SB 1147 there was just one vote between both bills and the governor’s desk, including passing unanimously out of the Senate Transportation committee.
As we look toward the 2025-2026 legislative session, our dedication to safe streets has not wavered. Our advocacy is rooted in the efficacy of this infrastructure, the impact it would have on the safety of Philadelphia streets, and the opportunity other municipalities will have. Through our partnership with a robust state-wide coalition that includes local organizations, committed volunteers, champions in the legislature, and businesses, we see a path forward.
Thank you the legislative champions who fought for this common sense legislation; Representative Ed Neilson, Representative Mary Jo Daley, Representative David Maloney, Representative Tarik Khan, Representative Darisha Parker, Representative Elizabeth Fiedler, Representative Joe Hohenstein, Representative Jared Solomon, Senator Tartaglione, Senator Bartolotta, Senator Kearney, Senator Saval, Senator Lindsey Williams, Senator Flynn, and many more. Your work to represent your constituents is crucial to the health and wellbeing of this commonwealth.
Thank you to partners BikePGH for co-leading this fight for the last 7 years. It is powerful to work together and we are at the precipice of growing our impact across all 67 counties of PA.
