On December 23rd, Bike Gloucester County (or BGC, a Bicycle Coalition Affiliate Group) had their first-ever holiday lights ride in the beautiful home town of BGC Chair Rebecca Kreck. Rebecca’s account of the night below:
40 well-lit riders including many children came out to slow roll through the neighborhood and get some much needed fresh air before the holiday frenzy. The town folks were in awe at the sight of a block-long group of cyclists touring the town. Christmas music played as we enjoyed the 5-mile ride, stopping to admire the most festive homes.
More importantly, we felt the holiday spirit by the inclusion of all ages and abilities just enjoying the night and the joy of bike riding. One of our participants sent me a really heartwarming note:
Thank you so much to the organizer of tonight’s bike ride! We moved here two years ago hoping for a small town community. Everyone was so kind to my daughter, who recently acquired her trike (after years of trying to ride a typical bike). She wanted to do the ride so bad and we’re glad we let her do a part of it! I hope this will be annual. Happy Holidays!
Wenonah’s new bike lanes and street lighting added to the safety of the ride. We thank the Mantua Police for joining by bike as well! And yes, this will surely become an annual event!
