Bike parking recently installed at a Center City PATCO Station.

Last week, the Bicycle Coalition told you all about SEPTA’s plans to install or expand covered bike parking at 14 selected regional rail stations in the Greater Philadelphia region, including Jefferson Station and Suburban Station in the city, and stations in Warminster, Langhorne, Glenside and Downingtown.

These installations, as noted in the SEPTA Sustainability Journal, are part of the Authority’s $3 million, 3-year program to implement the SEPTA Cycle Transit Plan, which we first reported on in the fall of 2014.

As great and forward-thinking as that information from SEPTA was, we heard even better news this week: SEPTA is now considering expanded covered-bike parking to eight additional stations in Philadelphia, along the Market-Frankford and Broad Street lines.

“Because the City of Philadelphia owns the sidewalks that surround SEPTA Market-Frankford and Broad Street Line stations, SEPTA will need to work with the City for approval of racks at street level. Where space constraints make it difficult to add street level bicycle parking, SEPTA is evaluating the possibility of adding bicycle racks on the mezzanine level of stations,” reads a recent journal update over at SEPTA.org.

The following stations have been proposed for covered parking:

Market-Frankford Stations

Berks Station
Girard Station
46th Street Station
52nd Street Station

Broad Street Line Stations

Oregon Station
Tasker-Morris Station
Spring Garden Station
Allegheny Station

We’ll update you as we learn more about these plans.
