On August 11th, Dr. Jerald Matt was tragically killed while cycling on the Schuylkill River Trail at the intersection with Ford Street and Lafayette Street in Norristown.
While cycling on shared-use paths is generally less stressful and safer than riding in mixed traffic, the design and maintenance of road intersections are crucial for safety. Although we do not have specific details about the crash, it is important to note that the trail runs directly adjacent to Lafayette Street and is integrated with the signalized intersection at Ford Street. At this intersection, right turns on red from Ford Street onto Lafayette Street are permitted. However, trail users have reported that vegetation partially obstructs the view of motorists making right turns. Additionally, Lafayette Street is a 60-foot-wide, four-lane road with a significantly higher design speed than its posted speed limit of 25 mph.
We recommend that the County and the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) conduct a road safety audit at the Lafayette-Ford intersection. The Bicycle Coalition is ready and able to partner with the County on any safety planning effort.
Dr. Matt was a dentist for more than 35 years at Main Line Dental Health & Wellness. According to his biography, he was an avid road and mountain cyclist who participated in multiple fundraising rides during the summer and fall. He also enjoyed cycling trips to Europe, including the French Alps and the Dolomites in Italy. He also offered free dental services to those in need, partnering with Donated Dental Services.
We extend our deepest condolences to Dr. Matt’s family and his many friends.
