The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia is entering an exciting new chapter as we announce a transition in our senior leadership. We’re pleased to share that Lana Harshaw, our Education Programs Director since 2023, is stepping into the role of Interim Executive Director.
Our current Executive Director, Chris Gale, will be departing the organization to pursue his next opportunity. Chris has agreed to remain with us over the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition, and we’re grateful for his commitment to the coalition’s mission.
A Moment of Gratitude: Safety Wins and Strengthened Partnerships
During his tenure, Chris led transformative work that has made our streets safer and our organization stronger. He championed increased Vision Zero funding and expanded our programming and advocacy efforts in underserved communities throughout Philadelphia. Following a series of tragic fatal crashes, Chris helped turn grief into action, successfully advocating for critical safety improvements in Center City and across the city while strengthening our relationships with municipal leaders.
“I came to the coalition with a mandate to make cycling safe and available to every Philadelphian — regardless of their race, socioeconomic status or ZIP code — and am proud of the work that we accomplished together during my time as Executive Director,” Chris reflected. “As I look toward my next opportunity, I’m leaving behind a lasting legacy and a strong team ready to continue this work.”
Board Chair Eric Frary reflected on Chris’s tenure: “Chris helped transform tragedy into lasting change by advocating for important safety improvements in Center City and across Philadelphia. He also strengthened our relationships with city leaders. We hope to build off these achievements as we recommit ourselves to improving the safety of our roadways and expanding cycling access to every community in our region.”
Looking Forward with Lana Harshaw
We’re thrilled that Lana Harshaw will be leading the coalition through this transition period. Since joining us in 2023, Lana has brought a powerful track record of advocating and organizing for equity and opportunity throughout Philadelphia and our region — experience that has prepared her well for this leadership moment.
A former Division I athlete, Lana’s career has spanned corporate, nonprofit, and entrepreneurial settings, always focusing on how sports and education can create pathways to opportunity. As a former Division I athlete and co-founder of SOAR Foundation Racing, a competitive cycling team grounded in Strength, Optimism, Achievement, and Respect, Lana understands how sports can transform lives and break down barriers. She’s channeled that insight into expanding our reach and impact across the region.
During Lana’s tenure as Education Programs Director, the Coalition has grown in exciting new directions. She’s expanded our education programs to reach younger audiences and their families, created workforce development opportunities, deepened partnerships with cycling teams serving underrepresented communities, and launched signature events like Hustle N Ride and Roll Wit It that have brought new energy to the movement. Now, as Interim Executive Director, she’ll bring that same vision and drive to leading the entire organization.
What This Means for Our Community
“I’m excited to take on this new role leading the Bicycle Coalition during this period of transition,” Lana said. “Working with our exceptionally talented team, we look forward to building off of Chris’ successes and doubling down our commitment to breaking down barriers to cycling and ensuring that every community in our city has access to safe streets.”
Under Lana’s leadership, we’re committed to expanding the programs and initiatives you’ve come to rely on — and creating new opportunities for every neighborhood in Greater Philadelphia. That means more protected bike lanes, more community events like Hustle N Ride and Roll Wit It, expanded youth programming, and relentless work toward the infrastructure improvements that make our streets safer for everyone — whether you’re on a bike, on foot, or taking transit.
Riding Together for a Safer, Brighter Future
This is an exciting moment for the Bicycle Coalition, and we want you to be part of it. Whether you’re a daily commuter, a weekend rider, or someone who’s curious about cycling but hasn’t taken the leap yet, there’s a place for you in our community.
We invite you to stay connected with us via our e-newsletter, sign up to volunteer, or join an upcoming ride or rally (Holiday Lights Ride is happening Dec 10th!). Together, we’ll continue building a Philadelphia where everyone — regardless of race, income, or ZIP code — can experience the freedom, health, and joy that comes from safe, accessible streets.
