The Montgomery County Board of Commissioners recently approved the County’s 2020 budget, and part of it was a jaw dropper for regional trail advocates: $10 million for trails.
$10 million in County money — just for 2020.
We are not aware of an investment of this calibre by a county in the Philadelphia region in a generation, if ever.
The allotment will be matched by $8 million in federal & state funding sources. This will pay for construction, trail design, and studies of future trails across the county, one which already has significant trail mileage. We salute Montgomery County for its commitment to trails, not just because they are a recreational amenity, but also because when complete, its trail network will provide crucial zero-emissions transportation choices.
