At our most recent BCYC Youth Advisory Council meeting, a conversation around mental health took center stage. Our eight students openly shared their thoughts and experiences, highlighting the importance of having support and strategies in place to navigate challenges.
Our presenter, Michael Nze, a seasoned therapist, guided the discussion with practical tools for recognizing and addressing mental health challenges. He emphasized the importance of simple strategies like breathing exercises and highlighted local resources for when more support is needed.
Yania, a student at WB Saul reflected on the value of accessible resources for managing all aspects of our wellness; “It’s cool that we have different resources available for not only our physical benefits, but also for our mental health.”
Beyond Yania’s reflection, Jonathan, Damir, and Anthony shared their personal experiences using grounding techniques and deep breathing to manage anxiety. Each of them had a unique approach—whether it was focusing on breath control, using sensory grounding techniques, or combining movement with mindfulness.
Their insights remind us all that mental wellness is a personal journey, and finding what works best for each person is key. Each of their techniques were different, yet all served the purpose of helping them manage anxiety in ways that fit their unique experiences and challenges.
The session was a powerful reminder that mental health is just as crucial as physical health, and that seeking support and sharing strategies strengthens our community. We’re proud of our Youth Advisory Council, ambassadors of their peers, for engaging in these conversations and look forward to continuing to create a space where mental and physical wellness is prioritized.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to grow and support each other, on and off the bike.
