The Lower Moreland Township, Montgomery County, section of the Pennypack Trail is the now complete and available for use. The last 0.83 of mile of the Pennypack Trail Extension at Byberry Road to County Line Road is another piece of the Circuit Trails network. Just north of this trail segment is the connection to the Newtown Rail Trail in Upper Southampton, Bucks County which is scheduled to open this July.
In Montgomery County, the Pennypack trail now extends for 6.2 miles along the scenic corridor beginning at Rockledge Park with connections to 9.8 miles of Pennypack Trail in Northeast Philadelphia. To celebrate this exciting connection at the Bucks-Montgomery border there’s plans for a joint ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled this fall.
Completion of the final section of trail in Montgomery County involved construction of a signalized pedestrian crossing at Byberry Road and the 0.7 miles of trail leading up to the connection at County Line Road, including a canopy structure under a railroad bridge owned by Norfolk Southern.
The Pennypack Trail holds important significance to the Greater Philadelphia Region with hundreds of thousands of visits annually. Now with safe connections into Bucks County expected this July, the annual visits are expected increase across the growing network of regional trails.
The photo above was captured and shared by the Friends of the Newtown Rail Trail community group at the signalized pedestrian crossing located at Byberry Road. We received an update on this segment of trail from Montgomery County Planning Commission noting that there is a small amount of paving left to do on the Montgomery County side of County Line Road — near the new signal where the trail connects into Bucks County.
Plans to host the ribbon cutting ceremony will be announced once construction of the new signal at County Line Road is completed and opened in Bucks and Montgomery Counties. Tentative plans to host the ribbon cutting are expected to be held sometime early fall. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting connection from the Pennypack to Newtown Rail Trail.
