The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia will host Philly’s 22nd Bike To Work Day on May 19, from 8am to 10am. Bike To Work Day is a morning celebrating bicycling as a fun, sustainable, healthy option for commuting to and from your workplace.
To celebrate, the Coalition has organized several Energizer Stations around the city, a group ride, and a rally/press conference at Philadelphia City Hall. While there, we will hear from several city leaders about the importance of bicycling, then present two “Bike-Phriendly Business” awards to worthy local companies in the for- and not-for-profit sectors.
“Bike to Work Day is a yearly-tradition in Philadelphia, where we encourage those interested in bicycling to come out and give it a shot, and celebrate those who ride their bicycle every day,” says Bicycle Coalition Executive Director Sarah Clark Stuart. “This Bike To Work Day, we’re in the midst of seeing real changes to Philadelphia’s streets, with a Vision Zero plan coming to fruition, and new plans and funds for protected bike lanes throughout the city. There’s never been a better time to begin commuting by bicycle.”
Sponsored by Allegra Allergy, Penn, Dero, Center City District, La Colombe, Snap Kitchen, The Last Drop Coffee, Philadelphia Bike Expo, Zipcar, Indego Bike Share and Urban Stems, there will be Energizer Stations throughout Center City, offering free coffee, snacks and refreshments from 8am to 9:30am.
The announced energizer stations will be at the Penn Museum (33rd and South Streets), The Last Drop Coffee House (13th and Pine), and along the Schuylkill River Trail, with our final destination being the press conference at Dilworth Park.
Snap Kitchen will provide snacks and Zipcar will provide bike lights at all stations. Energizer station coffee will generously be provided by The Last Drop and La Colombe.
Urban Stems will be providing flowers to build-your-own-bouquet at the Penn Museum station and offering blossoms at all stations. And Allegra Allergy will provide free product samples at all stations.
The Bicycle Coalition encourages anyone who wants to, to join a group ride. Cyclists will be joined by local civic and political leaders for a Bike To Work Celebration Ride at 8:45am, which will be a group ride from 3260 South Street to Dilworth Plaza, for a press conference and celebration event.
Beginning at 9am, members of the Bicycle Coalition and public officials will address the public about the importance of bicycling at Dilworth Park. Public officials will speak about the importance of bicycling, and the Bicycle Coalition will give four Bike-Phriendly Business Awards to worthy businesses who were nominated in April.
Then, at 5pm, the Bicycle Coalition will host a Happy Hour celebration at Yards Brewery (901 North Delaware Ave) where we will announce the winner of a free bicycle for one Bike To Work Day registrant.
