This past weekend, Hunting Park, affectionately known as the jewel of North Philadelphia, came alive with the vibrant energy of Hustle N’ Ride, a full-day celebration of running, cycling, and community spirit that brought people of all ages together in motion and unity.
The day began as participants gathered early for the Philadelphia Running Alliance-sponsored 5K Run & 2K Walk, hosted by SwaggaHouse Run Club & Tattoo Shop. From seasoned runners chasing personal records to families and neighbors strolling the scenic streets surrounding the park, this event set the tone for an empowering and inclusive day.
Mid-morning brought a rush of excitement as the BCYC youth stepped up for the Team Time Trials. As they worked together, demonstrating some of the aerodynamic techniques learned throughout the first several weeks of the program, they tore through the 1.25-mile loop, racing against the clock in a display of raw determination and ambition. Cheers echoed throughout the course as the crowd rallied behind each team of young riders, as they pushed through the finish line!
By late morning, the park buzzed with anticipation for the TD Bank Big Loop Community Ride. Cyclists of all ages and abilities gathered for a relaxed, 30-minute loop around the park, reveling in the shared joy of riding together. The laughter, bell rings, and friendly shouts painted a picture of a neighborhood on the move, united through fitness, fun, and a love for the ride.
The day’s final cycling event brought the high-speed action with the youth Criterium Races. Spectators lined the course to watch young riders take on sharp turns and fast straights, showcasing the skills and confidence they’ve honed. It was more than just a race, it was an opportunity for youth to experience some of the competitive aspects of cycling, as they raced against their fellow competitors, but also learned just how far and fast they could push themselves.
The Lil’ Philly Safety Village was a hub of joyful learning and giving. Thanks to the support of PECO and Philly Bike Ride, kids were treated to free bike play, safety tips, and a generous bike lights, helmet, and bike giveaway at noon. The Safety Village provided a safe, welcoming space for kids to discover the joy of riding, some for the very first time.
Hustle N’ Ride isn’t just an event, it’s a celebration of movement. Movement of bodies in motion, of communities coming together, of youth rising up, and of North Philadelphia showing the city and beyond what strength, joy, and unity look like. From the starting horn to the final cheer, Hunting Park shone brighter than ever.
Until next year, let’s keep hustling and riding!
