Pat Cunnane (left) celebrates a fall race.

From a 12-year-old sweeping floors and fixing flats in his neighborhood bike shop to a CEO manufacturing bicycles raced in the Tour de France, Pat Cunnane’s knowledge and love of cycling is ingrained in his DNA.

While Cunnane does change a flat now and then, his “neighborhood shop” now spans hundreds of markets across the globe. As President and CEO of Advanced Sports Enterprises (ASE), Cunnane oversees a company that markets and sells 10 premium bicycle and bicycle product brands – among them Fuji, Kestrel, SE Bikes and Breezer. ASE also operates an international wholesale business selling to more than 100 markets/countries worldwide. Cunnane’s most recent strategic move is the acquisition of Performance Bicycle, the largest specialty bicycle retail brand in the United States.

Cunnane’s career in the bicycle industry has seen him working in sales for wholesaler District Bicycle Supply, and then Ross Bicycles, where he became the youngest national sales manager in the industry. He has worked for Giant Bicycles and formed his own companies, Cunnane Bicycle, a distributor of bicycle parts, and an on-line business BicycleSurplus.com that he sold in 2001.

Cunnane joined Advanced Sports in 2001 and has overseen its growth from $7 million in sales to more than $300 million today.

Recognized by Bicycle Retailer and Industry News as its “Executive of the Year” in 2010, Cunnane is the Chair of People for Bikes, the country’s largest advocacy organization and Chair of the National Foundation for Fitness, Sport and Nutrition. He serves on the boards of the Bicycle Product Supplier’s Association, Wash-Cycle Laundry, and the Philadelphia Mayor’s Bicycling Advisory Board. He was awarded the Bicycle Product Supplier’s Association’s National Advocacy Award in 2012.

A graduate of Temple University, and still an avid cyclist, Cunnane lives and works in his hometown of Philadelphia.  Cunnane is married to Madeleine Dean, has three sons, a daughter-in-law and granddaughter he loves to ride with.

Pat Cunnane will be receiving the Maguire Award at our Annual Gala and Awards Dinner on September 29. Cunnane has been a local and national leader and champion of cycling issues for most of his life, and the Bicycle Coalition is honored to consider him a supporter and friend.
