The Equipando Familias program will continue to help equip communities to make cycling safe and fun way to get around for anyone in Greater Philadelphia.

Equipando Familias Equips South Philadelphia Families Over The Holidays

Over the 2019 holiday season, the Bicycle Coalition donated over 20 helmets and bicycle safety equipment through our Equipando Familias program and the Better Bike Share Partnership. The donation occurred during a holiday event in South Philadelphia hosted by Aquinas Center in partnership with the Mexican Consulate Center and the 3rd and 17th Police Districts.

Equipando Familias is a family bike rental program funded by PECO. The program helps families rent their bicycle equipment at a low cost. By owning safety equipment, such as bicycle seats and trailers, parents can transport their children safely and reliably. Thanks to funding and the program, more than 20 children and 3 families were able to receive safety equipment during the holidays.

“Helmets are needful,” said Christian Sosa, a parent of a 4-year-old and a cyclist who attended the event. “I know this because I use my bike all day for work and it’s my source of transportation. Helmets are very essential to ride a bike safely in this city, which sometimes is crazy with drivers.”

Sosa works in the restaurant industry. Most of his work colleagues ride bikes and, unfortunately, many have been involved in crashes. “I have had bad experiences with friends where they were involved in accidents, and parents should use helmets to show an example to their children. It also can save lives,” Sosa adds.

“We had the Bicycle Coalition give an Urban Riding Basics class at the Mexican Consulate. During their class there, they gave information about biking laws in addition to the benefits of biking to all different participants in the region,” said Humberto Cruz, Community Outreach Consul for the Mexican Consulate. “We hope that these workshops will continue since they are really helpful. We appreciate the partnership with the Coalition and their efforts to connect the community into biking”

The Equipando Familias program will continue to help equip communities to make bicycling safe and fun way to get around for anyone in Greater Philadelphia.
