Bicycle Coalition Youth Cycling’s spring season recently ended, but the program’s student athletes have been busier than ever the past few weeks: racing in Philly and beyond, hanging out at Pride together, participating in the 2nd Annual Philly Mountain Bike Phestival, and kicking off the 2018 All Star season.
Annual BCYC Criterium and Scholarship Awards
The BCYC Crit is the pinnacle of our 3-event omnium that our seven core youth teams that have been practicing for and competing in all spring long. Despite a rescheduling due to thunderstorms the weekend before, over 50 racers, parents, and our sponsor, District Tacos, showed up for the Crit on Saturday, June 9.
The race took place near the Please Touch Museum in West Fairmount Park.
Athletes were divided into three categories across their experience.
We closed the race with the long-awaited announcement of the winners of our college scholarships, funded by our friend Jerry Jacobs.
And with that: Congratulations to Mya Miller and Tajae’ McMillan, who not only have been racing with BCYC since they were freshmen, but are also dedicated members of B.CYC.le Squad and the Youth Advisory Council. Mya will be attending Franklin & Marshall College in the fall and Tajae’ will be attending Marywood University.
Race Team at Riverton Crit
On Sunday, June 10, BCYC coaches and Race Team athletes participated in the Riverton Criterium benefitting the Riverton School Language Arts Library Project.
Next up: The Race Team will be at the Pottstown Bike Race on July 22nd and the three-day Tour de Millersburg from August 3rd-5th.
Saul MTB team at Philly MTB Phestival
Also on Sunday, the Saul MTB team shredded in the Wissahickon in support of the Pumptrack’s youth outreach programs. The 2nd Annual Philly MTB Phestival raised nearly $5,000 for the Pumptrack’s programming, involved skills clinics, group rides, and demo bikes, and generated extra stoke for our MTB adventure days this summer and MTB team launch this fall!
2018 All Star Team launch
Last night we inducted our new All Stars and honored our returning athletes as BCYC friends, family and alumni gathered on Lemon Hill for a celebration and BBQ.
Fuji USA supplies bicycles to all of our athletes, and last night bikes were officially awarded to All Stars to take home for the first time. This summer they will be cycling on them with all of the other gear they need to bike safely (and stylishly) around the city — ABUS Urban series helmets and u-locks, District Taco cycling socks and water bottles, Piscitello Law bike lights, pumps, tool rolls, and more.
All Stars join one of our four summer teams: Race Team, Triathlon Team, Touring Team, and Cycle Squad. They will be practicing and racing through August. Follow their adventures and successes by checking in on our program calendar, watching our Instagram stories, and, maybe best of all, volunteering!
