This week, the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation began construction on a two mile central segment of the Delaware River Trail — much like the segment that exists between Spring Garden and along Penn Street. The trail will be a two-way cycle track with an adjacent sidewalk from Washington Avenue north to Spring Garden Street.
The work will involve the demolition and reconstruction of the eastern side of Delaware Avenue and will effectively close the northbound bicycle lane on Delaware Avenue for a period of 12-18 months. The southbound bike lane will remain open. The detour will look like this:
During this time, DRWC will maintain a fully signed detour for users of the lane. Northbound cyclists utilizing the Delaware Avenue lane will be detoured west on Reed Street to Front Street, then north on Front all the way to Spruce St. where signs will direct cyclists west to 3rd Street.
Cyclists will turn north on 3rd Street to Spring Garden Street’s on-street lanes east to the existing Penn Street Trail or to on-street lanes north on Delaware Avenue.
The trail is expected to open at the end of 2021. Please check out Delaware River Trail project site for views and information.
