In 2023, the Bicycle Coalition got serious work done:
1.) 115 youth participated in two seasonal Bicycle Coalition Youth Cycling programs from 11 Philadelphia schools and $30K in scholarships distributed to graduating high school seniors in 2023.
2.) 1,265 adults and children participated in bicycle safety classes, rides and events through our Better Bike Share Partnership, Bike Hubs and Explore the Circuit programs.
3.) Our advocacy for a Vision Zero Action Plan resulted in Philly securing over $200 Million in federal funds to improve 31 miles of dangerous roads.
4.) Transit Forward Philadelphia (TFP) and the Bicycle Coalition successfully advocated for bus and trolley-mounted cameras to automatically detect parking violations in bus stops and bus lanes.
5.) Transit Forward Philadelphia (TFP) successfully advocated for new programs to increase affordability and ridership through SEPTA’s Key Advantage (for City employees), a zero-fare program for low-income residents and a second free transfer.
6.) The Circuit is nearing 50% complete! 7.2 miles were completed in 2023, bringing the total to 391 miles.
7.) Hundreds of helmets and 650 bike lights were given away in Philadelphia and the City of Chester.
8.) NJ Circuit projects won $36.3 Million in federal funding.
9.) PA Circuit projects won $3.5 Million in state and federal funding.

Our Youth Cycling Program celebrated 10 years with two fantastic seasons of competition and fun. With a return to in-person events this year, BCYC youth raced in a handful of events including the BCYC Crit Race and the Philly Bike Race that showcased their cycling and teamwork development. We’re so grateful for our spirited athletes, coaches, staff, and new addition, BCYC Program Director, Lana Harshaw, for a successful BCYC year.

Our programs led a myriad of rides and events to improve bicycling in the eight counties surrounding Philadelphia in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The Explore the Circuit program brought riders to newly constructed segments throughout the region to spread awareness and advocacy for the expanding regional circuit. Our Indego group rides brought focus on making bike share more accessible, affordable, and equitable, while also working with community-based organizations that advocate for overall healthy living and resources for under-represented neighborhoods in Philadelphia. We’re also happy to report that we gave away over 100 bikes with helmets via our Bike Rodeos that we held in the city of Chester and Philadelphia.

The 2023 Vision Zero Conference had over 250 attendees with over 40 speakers to discuss the challenges and opportunities toward eliminating all traffic fatalities and severe injuries — while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all. Due to our work with Mayor Kenny’s administration to establish a model Vision Zero Action Plan in past years, the city was able to apply for larger federal grants than other cities across the country.

This major win is the culmination of a year-plus of collaboration and organizing, resulting in Philadelphia joining cities like New York and D.C. in enhancing efforts at behavioral change to make our buses and trolleys safer and more accessible, while improving speed and on-time performance. This legislation will especially improve transportation for Philadelphians with disabilities, as illegal parking at bus stops makes it dangerous and often impossible for wheelchair users to board or exit SEPTA buses.

713 persons contacted their county commissioners urging them to accelerate the development of Circuit trails by using discretionary federal funds to fully fund large Circuit projects from the design to final construction.
2023 was a year of record-smashing events!
Ride of Silence
Over 500 riders gathered at the 19th Annual Philadelphia Ride of Silence to demand respect for cyclists’ lives. They called for increased investment in safe road infrastructure, aiming for zero cyclist deaths in a year.
Bike to Work & Wherever Day
In May around 100 Philadelphians joined the Bicycle Coalition and Independence Blue Cross for Bike To Work & Wherever Day that touched three areas of the city to emphasize the importance of equitable access and safe infrastructure for our city’s robust cycling population.
BCGP Gala
Our annual gala not only broke record attendance with 236 attendees to celebrate BCYC Athlete of the Year Daa’mire Speight-Taylor and Maguire Awardee Dr. Keith Leaphart, in all, we came together to raise $143,700.
